Stonewalk Japan 2005 STONEWALK JAPAN 2005
Nagasaki to Hiroshima, Japan
July 2nd to August 4th, 2005

On the 60th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

On August 6, 1945, the city of Hiroshima was the target of the first atomic bomb used against civil population in history. Three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb over the city of Nagasaki. In total, about one quarter of a million people were killed by the two bombs. Today, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the country of Japan are strongly engaged in banning nuclear weapons and their testing worldwide.

Stonewalk Japan 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the thousands killed by the atomic bombs, with a peace walk from Nagasaki July 2nd, to Hiroshima, August 4th.

STONEWALK JAPAN, the fifth global walk honoring civilians killed in war, will begin in Nagasaki July 2nd, and finish August 5th in Hiroshima where the Memorial Stone will be placed permanently in the Hiroshima Peace Park.

The Peace Abbey and September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows are the two organizations heading up this journey. The Peace Abbey, a multi-faith retreat center, founded on the principles of pacifism, offers innovative models for society that empower individuals on the path to nonviolence, peacemaking and cruelty-free living.September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, an organization founded by family members of those killed on September 11th have united to turn their grief into action. The group, now of more than 150 members, has made contact with other civilian victims of terrorism and war, throughout the world. Their mission is to promote dialogue on alternatives to war, while educating the public on issues of peace and the root causes of war and terrorism, and work to create a safer and more peaceful world for everyone.

Members of Stonewalk team will be joined by Japanese people, in pulling the Memorial Stone 270 miles, remembering, on this 60th anniversary, the thousands of people killed by the atomic bombs in 1945. The Hibakusha, survivors of the bombings, will help to prepare for the event, participate in walking with the stone, and join in the opening and closing ceremonies.

Funds are needed to bring the specially created caisson to and from The Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts, USA, to purchase and transport the stone, to provide water and food for volunteers, and finally to help with the transportation of the team. We need your help to express to the world the need for peace by honoring women, children, and men, the elderly and disabled whose lives were lost and who suffered as a result of the devastating effects of atomic bombing and radiation.
